Thepart that I understood most in the excerpt of “The AccidentalAmerica” was honesty. Mamdouh was an honest person since hischildhood. His family identified him as a truthful, clear-cut childwho remained peaceful with his siblings. He maintained a closerelationship with his older brother, Mohammed, and learnt swimmingand driving. Mamdouh did not feel poor because he made soccer ballsand toys from materials within his home. This part stood out becauseit portrays Mamdouh as a happy young man despite his problems. Hewent to the countryside to his uncle’s residence in Ben Hamedduring the summer season. Mamdouh enjoyed watching Hindi films fromBombay. He also watched Bollywood actors, such as Amitabh Bachchan,Rishi Kapoor, and Rajesh Khanna. This part also stood out for mebecause Mamdouh believed in himself despite his poor upbringing.
Thesecond part that I understood from the excerpt of “The AccidentalAmerica” was how Mamdouh started making money at a young age.Growing up in poor-stricken neighborhoods increased hisinnovativeness. He picked through the second-hand goods from theEuropeans and Americans, washed or mended before reselling them onthe street. This part stood in me because of Mamdouh’s cleverness, determination, and generosity despite the challenges in his life. Heremoved his clothes and sold them often. He sold some of the shoes hewore one day and went home in his socks. Furthermore, Mamdouh was thefirst person in his family to open a bank account at the age 17years. He always wanted to improve his life and lectured his friendsabout changing their lives by attending school and maintaining hope.
