Applying for a Job

Jankovicadvises that before one applies for a particular job, they have todecide on the kind of job they want to do first (13). This step is aprecautionary measure to avoid getting a job that does not meet yourexpectations, or one that you may fail to perform adequately. Assuch, I examined my personal needs and desires for employment first.Among the things that I considered with priority were the salary andworking hours. Given my experience, I avoided applying for a job thatwould pay me less than I expected. Firstly, I considered the careerfield. Given that I was transitioning from sales to marketing, I hadto consider the challenges the I would face in the new field. Whiledoing the same, I evaluated my skills, after which I found out that Iwas fit to seek the job from the company that I wished to work for.

Afterdeciding on the job that I wished to apply for, I set uponinvestigating the repute of the company. This is in acknowledgementof the fact that the career progress of an individual is greatlyinfluenced by the kind of company that they work for (Snieder andLarner 16). As such, I got to research the company’s backgroundinformation, including employees and management profiles. While doingthis, I reviewed the company’s line of products and services, whichentailed visiting their site and going through their official companywebsite. The information that I obtained from this investigation wasimportant in preparing me for an interview. Many companies are mostlikely to employ people who have a deep background information abouttheir products and services. Moreover, by conducting such aninvestigation, I had the opportunity of learning about better jobopenings that I would apply for. However, I was satisfied with thejob opening that I had thought of was good to go with.

Thethird major step was preparing my resume. According to Snieder andLarner, even if a job does not need one, it is complimentary toprepare a resume and present it along with your credentials andapplications (21). I first went through my resume and updatedinformation that was lacking. I ensured that my education history andworking experience were well captured, as well as the ambitions thatI had for my career. At the same time, I ensured that my contactinformation and referees were well captured. Most employers areinterested in contacting your referees and confirming the informationthat you include in your resume. After this, I contacted the employerto ask about the application process. The reason for doing this wasto ensure that I did not miss any important dates, such as theinterview data and the trials schedules.

Thelast two steps were writing a cover letter and getting a secondopinion from peers and mentors. While writing the cover letter, Iensured that I was specific to the company and the job opening. Atthe same time, I discussed key issues such as my work background, recognition awards and ambition. After this, I sought the advice ofmy family, who I value in my educational and career progress. Afterensuring that everything was checked and confirmed, I prepared myselfmentally, and went for the long awaited interview for the marketingjob.
