Video games have become animportant element in today’s society. It is estimated that childrenaged 8-28 years play video games for 8 hours every week (Boulanger,2013). However, much of the argument has been against video games fortheir negative effects on children, such as increased aggression,addiction, and negative psychological effects (Griffins, 2002).Despite these negative consequences, video games have positiveconsequences as well. The essay discusses video games positiveeffects in promoting learning in children.

Videogames have great positive learning experiences in addition to being asource of entertainment. They help children to set goals and rehearseon how to meet them. They challenge children to increase their logic,which translates to real life when faced with a problem (Griffiths,2002). This has a positive impact on the child’s problem-solvingabilities which aids in learning. Video games also increase theattention span which is key in learning. In addition, they ensure ahigh degree of interactivity, therefore, demand quick thinking andprocessing of information (Griffiths, 2002). This promotes learningin that children who play video games make decisions 25% faster thanthe others without sacrificing accuracy.

Videogames help children to develop their fine and motor skills as well asimprove hand-eye coordination. Video games require repetitivesimultaneous behavior which promotes multitasking (Bavelier et al.,2011). This places high demands on the brain by connecting variousregions required for different task completion in quick successionpromoting the acquisition multitasking skills relevant in learning(Boulanger, 2013). It also promotes fine motor skills as well ashand-eye coordination by using the hands to control what the childsees on the screen.

Inconclusion, since video games have the ability to engage children inlearning, they have in turn become an essential tool towards thelearning process of children in different aspects such as psychomotorskills, cognitive, as well as psychological. This has promoted“edutainment” where video games are used to stimulate criticalthinking and promote learning in children. Video games help childrento acquire language and creative problem-solving skills as well asincrease their attention span. All these traits promoteindividualized learning and teamwork in the classroom.
